DJ Lag has been very busy lately, and has just added a collaboration between himself and New York’s ex-Immortal Instruments producer, Epic B, to the heap of adventurous releases. This one is a riddim of note, called “Going Modd” – off the UK label Swing Ting – and is available on Bandcamp and Soundcloud for pre-order.
Born and raised in East NY and Brownsville, Epic B is a producer, DJ, rapper, photographer, videographer, and visual artist. While his previous work stretches from dancehall riddims (he produced one that Vybz Kartel and Popcaan jumped on in 2009) to hip hop beats, Epic’s current focus is on Flex Dance Music. What began as a type of music accompanying flex – a dance style originating from Brooklyn characterised by elements including bone breaking, gliding, and pausing – has in recent years progressed into a distinct genre. The original essence of flex dance music, dense dancehall mixes with layers of rhythms and sound effects, has evolved into a distinct electronic dancehall sound with booming 808s, lasers, and chopped vocal samples. Enjoy!
