Bongeziwe Mabandla Releases Album Ndingubani

Multi-award-winning South African singer-songwriter Bongeziwe Mabandla has released his fifth studio album, Ndingubani, out now via Black Major.

The release follows the rollout of the singles Walila, Zama, and Yalwa. The songs connected strongly with listeners and built momentum across streaming platforms, radio, and social media.

Fans have embraced the honesty and vulnerability in the new music. Many have shared lyrics and personal reflections online, helping to shape the conversation around the album.

A Question of Identity

Meaning “Who am I?” in isiXhosa, Ndingubani is Mabandla’s most personal project to date.

The album explores identity, healing, memory, and self-discovery. Written during a period of reflection, it draws from experiences that have shaped both his life and his music.

Throughout the project, Mabandla reflects on his journey from rural Tsolo in the Eastern Cape to stages around the world. He explores the challenges, sacrifices, and moments of growth that have defined his path.

A Longstanding Creative Partnership

Ndingubani marks Mabandla’s fourth collaboration with producer Tiago Correia-Paulo.

Over the years, the pair have developed a distinctive sound that blends folk, neo-soul, and African songwriting traditions. Together, they create space for Mabandla’s voice and storytelling to remain at the centre of the music.

Stories of Resilience and Reflection

The album moves between vulnerability and strength.

Lead single Libambe Lingatshoni introduces the album’s themes of identity and self-reflection. Meanwhile, Ndikhulule (Depression) confronts emotional exhaustion and the weight of trauma while searching for hope and healing.

On Zama, Mabandla traces the places that shaped him. The song moves from the Eastern Cape to boarding school and later Johannesburg, where he pursued music and searched for belonging.

Yalwa explores themes of legacy and destiny. Inspired by Shaka iLembe, the song reflects on the influence of mothers and becomes a tribute to Mabandla’s own family history.

Elsewhere, Kude looks back on how far he has come. Written after a cancer scare, the song reflects on gratitude, perspective, and resilience.

The album also features Cameroonian singer-songwriter Blick Bassy on Ndije. Together, they explore self-acceptance and the journey towards embracing every part of oneself.

A Leading Voice in African Alternative Music

Over the past decade, Bongeziwe Mabandla has become one of the defining voices in contemporary African alternative music.

Alongside artists such as The Cavemen, Msaki, and Blick Bassy, he has helped expand the possibilities of African songwriting. His work blends traditional influences with folk, neo-soul, and alternative sounds.

Working largely as an independent artist, Mabandla has built a loyal audience across the world. He has performed sold-out shows throughout Europe, the United States, and South Africa.

His music has also reached new listeners through platforms such as COLORS. Along the way, he has earned three South African Music Awards, a Metro FM Music Award, and a Feather Award.
