Today, South African quintet The Joy announce brand new single “Heartbreaker”. The track was co-written with MNEK who reached out to the band’s producer Two Inch Punch (Kali Uchis, Jessie Ware, Years & Years) about working together. On a trip to London they got together at September’s Studio and wrote “Heartbreaker” during a two week writing session.
The track follows on from the recently released singles “Mountain” and “Umona”, all taken from their six-track Hammarsale EP which will be released August 4 on Transgressive Records. With their roots in traditional Zulu music and modern acapella, their latest offering tells stories from home.
The group explain, “The songs are pictures of our lives and daily experiences in the township of Hammarsale in Kwazulu Natal where we grew up, met and live in. The songs speak about love and hate, separation and unification, jealousy and trust, regret, hope and forgiveness. ‘Heartbreaker’ is a song about hurt, the end of love and finding it hard to find true love. And when you do the challenge of trusting. It is about everyone carrying scars from love.”
In addition, the group announce they will perform at Glastonbury festival this weekend, alongside a string of other UK appearances. Fresh from their inaugural UK performances at The Great Escape, including an opening slot for label-mate Arlo Parks, they also join the bill for Love Supreme and Soho House festivals, as well as supporting Young Fathers at Somerset House.
