In one of the most highly anticipated collaborations in electronic music, colossal South African DJ/Producers DJ Lag and Que DJ have joined forces for their sensational new single ‘Where’s Your Father?’
Released on November 4th, the single will be available on all streaming platforms in time for the upcoming party season. Built around the unforgettable lyric – “Where’s your mother?/Where’s your father?” – DJ Lag and Que DJ bring their impeccable Gqom lineage to the propulsive, explosive track.
Known best for constructing artful Gqom productions that have gone from township taverns to silver screens, gallery spaces and club floors the world over, this is the first time that DJ Lag and Que DJ have worked together on one song.
“We are considered as the Gqom originators and so this collaboration is only befitting personally,” says Que DJ. “I’ve always wanted to work with DJ Lag and now we’ve finally found the time to make it happen.” Listen
“The idea for the song came when I was DJing at a club,” reveals DJ Lag. “Que and my best friend Skoro were there and Que just took the mic and started saying, ‘Where’s your father, where’s your mother?”. There had been a video of Skoro saying those lines and it was trending on social media. Que started saying it in the club and in the morning we headed straight to the studio to record the song.”
DJ Lag has been growing stronger with every release, and in just six years has established himself as a world-class sonic innovator who has taken one of the exciting electronic music movements of the 21st century from South Africa into the global spotlight. A sonic explorer unafraid of moving across boundaries of sound and geography, he is easily capable of standing alongside the world’s biggest stars. Collaborating with Beyonce and Tierra Whack on ‘My Power’, he went on to release his debut album Meeting With The King to critical press acclaim in early 2022.
Meanwhile the charismatic Que DJ, who started his musical career as one half of Distruction Boyz, is now a South Africa Music Awards (SAMA)-nominated solo artist with his own record label, Amagogogo Sounds. Setting the world alight with his Johannesburg Boiler Room earlier this year, he is responsible for heavy-hitting tracks like “P.A.B” and “No No” which have traversed the globe since their release.
On “Where’s Your Father?” the powerful linkup of these two Gqom masters has resulted in a single that pays immense homage to their heritage, whilst simultaneously creating a strong electronic masterpiece – and is sure to shake the foundations of electronic music even further.
