Dream-like deep house producer Ashwin ‘Dwson’ Julies returns with his latest release, Glimpses of You via Jorja Smith and Mr Eazi collaborators, Platoon. Based in Kensington, Cape Town, Dwson has made a name for himself as one of South Africa’s most exciting electronic music talents – able to effortlessly blend emotion and groove. Combining whimsical chords with rolling basslines and playful drums, Dwson lays the perfect foundation for any vocalist to become inspired in their own ways.
“Putting this EP together was such a fun time. I got to express different sides of me… Every time I put out a project, I like going against the grain and I’m sure everyone knows by now that I love to experiment… and I will continue doing that. We had such a good time putting together this project with the various collaborators and teams, I hope people enjoy it.”
Glimpses of You was recorded in the space of a week at Popsicle Studios in Woodstock, with the aim of producing a body of work which explored the synergy between Dwson and these three exciting vocal collaborators. Influenced by old school R’nB, classic soulful house and the new deep house sound currently forming an identity in Cape Town, the result is an undoubtedly-Dwson signature, embellished with unique vocal tones in all but one of the four tracks, “If Only You Knew” leaving room to explore the texture between his chosen sounds.
Featured on the title track is lead singer of rock-femme duo Hyroine, Roxy Caroline, laying down ethereal lyrics not so far from the sound the two have come to be known for; future folk genius, Dumama, well-known for experimental live shows, commands audiences with her unrelenting, yet soothing incantations on “Mamela’” Finally, Sio and Dwson remind us of their perfect synergy with the final feature track “Nobody Else,” after finding much success with 2017’s ‘Forbidden.’
Dwson is set to perform at this year’s Ultra and Design Indaba Festivals, after a groundbreaking show at Cape Town Electronic Music Festival alongside label-mate Cornelius.
