Bongeziwe Mabandla’s fifth studio album, Ndingubani, has surpassed one million streams, marking another milestone for one of South Africa’s most celebrated independent artists.
Released in June, Ndingubani explores themes of identity, healing, belonging, and self-discovery. Meaning “Who am I?” in isiXhosa, the album invites listeners into Mabandla’s most personal body of work to date.
The project has been led by a string of standout releases. Yalwa introduced the album with a message of hope inspired by the relationship between Shaka and his mother in Shaka iLembe. Zama followed with a deeply personal reflection on home, resilience, and the places that have shaped Mabandla’s life.
Walila brought a theatrical and playful perspective to the album, exploring themes of karma, consequence, and justice through vivid storytelling. More recently, Libambe Lingatshoni has continued to resonate with listeners, capturing the emotional honesty and introspection that define Ndingubani.
Produced alongside longtime collaborator Tiago Correia-Paulo, the album blends African songwriting traditions, folk, and neo-soul into a sound that has become uniquely Bongeziwe Mabandla. Together, the songs form a cohesive journey through vulnerability, growth, and self-acceptance.
The one million-stream milestone follows a successful international touring season and a sold-out South African tour, further cementing Ndingubani as another defining chapter in Mabandla’s career.
As the album continues to reach new audiences around the world, Ndingubani stands as a testament to the power of honest storytelling and music rooted in both personal experience and cultural identity.
