August 4th saw the release of South African quintet The Joy’s brand new EP Hammarsdale on Transgressive Records
With their roots in traditional Zulu music and modern acapella, their latest offering tells stories from home, in a way that connects with audiences across the globe. The group explain, “The songs are pictures of our lives and daily experiences in the township of Hammarsdale in Kwazulu Natal where we grew up, met and live in. The songs speak about love and hate, separation and unification, jealousy and trust, regret, hope and forgiveness.”The release of Hammarsdale is the latest in a range of appearances and collaborations that are bringing The Joy closer to their growing global fanbase. Recently they teamed up with DJ-producer The Blessed Madonna, appearing on the hit “Shades of Love”, which was christened as both a Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1 as well as a playlist single. Their live shows are also drawing fans in: in 2023 they have played The Great Escape, Love Supreme and Soho House festivals, as well as supporting Young Fathers at Somerset House and also performed their song “Isencane Lengane” for the BBC while at Glastonbury 2023. In early July, the group performed their first solo show, selling out The Old Church Stoke Newington in London.
