Morena Leraba heads to Addis Ababa for On the Grind Festival

ON THE GRIND festival is a celebration of the rise of Ethiopian alternative culture. It kicks off this Saturday February 6 by presenting the first two Ethiopian projects selected from the ON THE GRIND call for applications launched a few weeks ago @Chewata Awaqi, a collective of gamers will make games available to the public including VR content, and @Mekbib Tadesse, photographer with an extraordinary talent to capture stories and emotions will present a “street art” interpretation of portraits of elderly people taken during the COVID crisis. In addition to these two artists, ON THE GRIND also brings in Morena Leraba the flagbearer of a remodelled Lesotho sound, a shepherd turned rapper whose traditional Famo-inspired vocals are weaved with electronic music, dub and echoes of hip hop, to create a psychedelic and entrancing sound that is still evolving. For the first time in Ethiopia! Definitely underground!
Dj Tera, rising Ethiopian artist specializing in Deep, Afro and Progressive House will open the floor to Morena Leraba starting from 6pm.Not to be missed! In order to comply with our health protocol, the event will be limited to 300 people.
We kindly ask you to bring your mask and respect social distancing. In recent years, Alliance has supported the rise of alternative culture/arts in Ethiopia through the ON THE GRIND festival. For the 3rd edition, the festival will be held between February and June 2021, in different places in the city and we are teaming-up with the Goethe-Institut for an even more surprising experience. Goethe-Institut and Alliance are partnering with Institut Français, the Embassy of France, the Embassy of Spain and the EU Delegation to Ethiopia, with the support from the Franco-german Cultural Fund.
